Regis Men’s Soccer Falls in Overtime Thriller

WESTON, Mass. – After falling behind 2-0 at the end of the first half, Regis College rallied back to tie the match at 2-2 and force overtime, but Colby-Sawyer College received some luck in the second overtime period for the game-winning goal, as the Chargers defeated the Pride, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer contest at Regis Stadium.

Regis controlled possession for most of the first half, outshooting Colby-Sawyer 7-2 in the first 40 minutes of the contest. The Chargers drew a series of three corner kicks, with the third one in the 45th minute making its way to Jake Lubas, who found Noah Camelo for his sixth goal of the season.

Just 34 seconds later, the Chargers struck again, this time with Tim Driscoll sending a pass from the right side into the box. The ball made its way to Matt Schiller, who converted on the shot for his second goal of the season with just eight seconds remaining in the first half, extending the Charger lead to 2-0 at halftime.

The Pride continued to pressure the Charger defense at the start of the second half, with Ken Niyonzima (Dracut, Mass.) converting on the first shot after halftime just over two minutes into the second half to cut the Regis deficit in half.

As play continued, the Pride enjoyed several chances to tie the match, finally succeeding in the 76th minute when Brendan Plasczynski (Bristol, Conn.) found Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) in the box. Triana scored his sixth goal of the season, creating a 2-2 tie that would remain through the end of regulation.

Each team took two shots in the first overtime period with no success, extending the contest further. Just over a minute after a shot by Triana sailed high, there was a scramble in front of the Pride net, and a clearing attempt by Regis hit Mason Galbato and went into the net, ending the game in Colby-Sawyer's favor with 4:02 remaining in the second overtime session.

Lucas Boetsch made four saves in net for the Chargers as he picked up his fifth victory of the season. Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calf.) played the entire match in net for the Pride and helped the defense keep Colby-Sawyer off the scoreboard while Regis was making its comeback in the second half.

Regis (8-5-2, 4-5-2 GNAC) will host Emerson in the regular season finale Tuesday, Oct. 23, starting at 4 p.m. The Pride will then prepare for the GNAC Tournament, which starts next Saturday, Oct. 27, with the quarterfinals.
