STANDISH, Maine – The offense of nationally ranked Saint Joseph's College was too much for Regis College, as the Monks defeated the Pride, 4-0, Saturday evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer match at the SJC Athletic Complex.
Saint Joseph's (9-0, 5-0 GNAC), ranked 16th in this week's United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III national poll and second in the New England regional ranking, struck first in the 33rd minute when Cody Elliott set up Austin Ward for his fourth goal of the season. With just over two minutes remaining in the first half, Elliott picked up his third goal of the year off an assist by Colin Grant.
The Monks put the match away early in the second half with two goals in the span of three minutes, with Elliott assisting on both tallies. Brett Mattos earned his seventh goal of the season in the 53rd minute, followed by the fourth goal of the match for Saint Joseph's by Mitchell Duncan, his second of 2018, in the 56th minute.
Saint Joseph's outshot Regis, 24-8, led by Mattos with five total shots, including three shots on goal. Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) was the only Pride player with more than one shot, as he finished with two shots.
Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) started in net for the Pride and made four saves in the first 58 minutes of the match before being replaced by Josh Barrows (Rochester, N.Y.), who made three saves in his first appearance for Regis after transferring from Mount Ida. Blake Mullen made two saves in 70 minutes for the Monks before David Walbridge took over in net.
Regis (3-3-1, 1-3-1 GNAC) plays its first home match in three weeks Wednesday, Sept. 26, against Suffolk beginning at 4 p.m. at Regis Stadium. It will be the first of three straight GNAC home contests for the Pride, as they host Albertus Magnus Saturday, Sept. 29, and Norwich Wednesday, Oct. 3, both also with a 4 p.m. start time.
