Men's Soccer Wins GNAC Quarterfinal 3-1 over Mount Ida

The #5 Regis (Mass.) men’s soccer team used two second half goals from junior Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) to lift the Pride to a 3-1 win over #4 Mount Ida College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinals at Alumni Field.

NEWTON, Mass. - The #5 Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team used two second half goals from junior Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) to lift the Pride to a 3-1 win over #4 Mount Ida College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinals at Alumni Field. The win was the first ever GNAC Tournament game and win in the history of Regis Athletics.

With the win, the Pride improves to 10-7-1 on the season and advances to face the top-seeded Monks of Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Wednesday, who defeated #8 Suffolk 1-0 in other GNAC Quarterfinal action on Sunday afternoon. Mount Ida's season ends with a record of 8-8-2.

In the 38th minute, sophomore Grayson Owens (Marshfield, Mass.) opened the scoring with this third goal of the season. The play got started when Triana took a ball deep in the left corner of the field and fed a pass into the middle to freshman Fabyanno Furbino (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) in the top of the box. Furbino one-touched the ball to Owen in the right side of the box and beat Riley Ford (Guilderland, N.Y.) to the top left corner to put the Pride ahead 1-0. Despite the Mustangs outshooting the Pride 8-5 in the opening period, the Pride would carry the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Triana would stretch the Pride's lead to two in the 56th minute. After Ford turned away the Triana's initial attempt, the junior would pick up the rebound and put the ball home through the keeper's legs for a 2-0 lead.

Mount Ida would not go down quietly however, as Alex Wright (East Haddam, Conn.) picked up his first goal of the season in the 66th minute. Off a corner, Wright got his leg to a ball played in by freshman Braeden Krakosky (Sachse, Texas), defeated keeper Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Triana sealed the deal in the 75th minute with his second goal of the afternoon and 16th of the season. After Cesar Da Silva (Boca Raton, Fla.) played a ball forward, Triana juked around a defender to put himself in on a breakaway down the left side. Ford charged out to try to cut down Triana's angle, put Triana slyly chipped the ball over the top and into the net and eventually securing the Pride's 3-1 win.

Ford picked up the loss on the afternoon, making seven saves to drop to 8-8-2 on the year. Bonilla grabbed the win with eight saves to improve to 10-7-1 on the year.
