Men's Soccer Nearly Scores Epic Comeback In Loss At Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Regis (Mass.) men's soccer team nearly pulled off an epic comeback, scoring three second-half goals but ultimately falling 4-3 to Norwich in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday night.

Sophomore Luke Gleadle (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored twice, while sophomore Carlos Guerra (Mission, Texas) and senior Camilo Estrada (Pawtucket, R.I.) each added a goal to round out the Norwich (5-3-4, 3-0-3 GNAC) scoring.

Gleadle opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing off a pass from Trey Tomasi (Williston, Vt.) by flipping the ball over the Regis goalkeeper as he came off his line to challenge for his third goal of the season.

Less than two minutes later Estrada made it 2-0 after he chased down a pass from Matt Hilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.), cut the ball to the inside and then ripped a shot just inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season.

Norwich capped the first half scoring with 17 seconds left in the half when Greg Zydanowicz (Newington, Conn.) found Guerra on a crossing pass in the middle of the box and then Guerra deposited the ball into the back of the net for his second of the season.

The Cadets added what appeared to be an insurance tally in the 59th minute that turned into the eventual game-winning goal when Gleadle scored his second of the match and fourth of the season off an assist from Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.).

Regis (7-5-0, 4-3-0 GNAC) went to work from there. The Pride finally got on the board in the 63rd minute with Grayson Owens (Marshfield, Mass.) ripping an outside foot shot into the right corner of the net off a feed off the end line from Cesar Da Silva (Boca Raton, Fla.).

Just over 1:30 later, Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) cashed in on a penalty kick attempt after a NU player was whistled for a hand ball in the box. Triana buried the ball into the left corner of the net to make it 4-2 for his 11th goal of the season.

Regis cut the deficit to 4-3 in the 75th minute with Fabyanno Furbino (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) scoring an unassisted goal by ripping the ball from the top of the 18 through the hands of Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.).

Germano made three saves to improve to 5-3-4 on the season. Jesse Bonilla made 13 saves for Regis in the loss.

Regis is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 11 with a host matchup versus Johnson & Wales (RI). Norwich returns to action when it hosts Lasell College on Wednesday on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
