Men's Soccer Edges Fitchburg State In Double Overtime

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Sophomore Ken Niyonzima (Burlington, Mass.) tallied his first goal of the season, striking three minutes into double overtime to lift the Pride to a 2-1 double overtime win at Fitchburg State.

How It Happened

Sophomore Ken Niyonzima (Burlington, Mass.) tallied his first goal of the season, striking three minutes into double overtime to lift the Pride to the win. 

Fitchburg State got on the board first when freshman Yannick DePina (Boston, Mass.) split the Regis defense and chipped it over the charging Pride keeper Jesse Bonilla (Ramona, Calif.) at the 17:04 mark of the first frame.

After the intermission, Regis knotted the game when junior Litchie Barbosa (Boston, Mass.) fed Derek Triana (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) through the middle for the forwards fifth goal of the season. 

Inside the Numbers 

Bonilla posted 12 saves over 104 minutes for his third win, while Alex Al-Zaibak (Hingham, Mass.) stopped 8 Regis shots in the loss.

Fitchburg held the advantage in shots (23-16) and corner kicks (4-3).

DePina, Nolan Brassard (Leominster, Mass.), and Matthew Krikorian (Groton, Mass.) each had three shots on net for the Falcons.

This is the sixth meeting between the two schools with Falcons 3-3 when taking on the Pride.

Fitchburg State goalkeepers Branton Abbett (0.00) and Alex Al-Zaibak (1.00) rank first and fourth respectively in the MASCAC in goals against average.

Both teams return to action on Saturday afternoon. Fitchburg State hosts Mass. Maritime in MASCAC action at 1:00pm, while Regis travels to Albertus Magnus at noon.
