SUFFOLK DOWNS REGIS, 2-1

WESTON, Mass. – Suffolk University defeated Regis College, 2-1, in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night in Weston, Mass. The Rams improve to 3-6 overall with the win while Regis drops to 2-7-2 in 2013.

Neither team produced much offense through the opening 17 minutes of play until Suffolk's Aaron Haggas (London, England) put the first shot of the day on goal, where it was saved by the Pride's Stefan Todorovic (Los Angeles, Calif.). Suffolk rattled off three more shots in a five minute span, but none were on net as the score was tied with just less than nine minutes to play in the first half.

Suffolk finally broke through when Andres Cohen (Caracas, Venezuela) received a through ball and missed on his first attempt, but regained possession and fired a shot on net. The Pride's Nick Tavares (Bellingham, Mass.) was there to block the shot, but the rebound found the feet of Djibril Niang (Dakar, Senegal), and the junior buried the shot near post to put the visitor's on top 1-0.

Regis' best opportunity half came when Angel Aguilar (Silver Springs, Md.) found himself alone just outside the 18, but his shot sailed wide of its mark as the Pride entered the half trailing 1-0.

The Pride wasted no time finding the equalizer as a long throw into the box from Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn.) found its way over the defense and to the feet of Ricardo Arguetta (Los Angeles, Calif.). Arguetta then hit Don Gomez (Lynn, Mass.) with a quick pass in front and Gomez buried the shot to knot the score at 1-1. The Pride nearly took a 2-1 lead six minutes later when Caliendo tossed another great throw into the box that found Arguetta again, but the senior's header missed right, and the score remained 1-1.

Suffolk nearly took the lead with 28 minutes remaining in the period when Cohen found himself one-on-one with Todorovic, but the senior netminder stoned him. On the ensuing goal kick, Suffolk won the ball out of the air and Alberto Benhamu (Caracas, Venezuela) hit Cohen with a great pass and Cohen had the upperhand this time as he beat the Regis keeper top shelf and gave Suffolk a 2-1 lead.

Regis had a chance to tie in the 68th minute as Ricardo Arguetta had an open shot, but his shot went high of its target and Regis remained down a goal. Nearly five minutes later, Ibrahim Alpha (Pennsauken, N.J.) hustled down the right sideline and won the ball away from the Suffolk defender and Alpha lofted a crossing pass into the box. Cody Puglisi (Centereach, N.Y.) jumped into the air to head the ball on the open net, but again the shot went high of the goal.

The Pride fired two more shots on goal in the period, but Suffolk's Nicholas Chamma (Rio de Janero, Brazil) made both saves as the Rams held on for the 2-1 win.

Regis held a slight edge in shots, 15-14, while both teams had two corner kicks in the game. Chamma improves to 3-5 with the win, making three saves, while his counterpart Stefan Todorovic also made three saves in defeat.

The Pride returns to New England Collegiate Conference play on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Newbury College for a 3:30 p.m. contest. Suffolk travels to Johnson & Wales University on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. conference game.
