WILLIAM PATERSON CAPTURES INAUGURAL PRIDE CUP
William Paterson University captured the first ever Regis Pride Cup with an 8-0 victory over host Regis College in men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-0-1 on the young season while the Pride suffers its first setback and falls to 2-1 overall. William Paterson’s Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J.) scored a hat-trick and also added an assist in the victory.
WESTON, Mass. – William Paterson University captured the first ever Regis Pride Cup with an 8-0 victory over host Regis College in men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers improve to 2-0-1 on the young season while the Pride suffers its first setback and falls to 2-1 overall. William Paterson's Naeem Boucher (Paterson, N.J.) scored a hat-trick and also added an assist in the victory.
The first half was all William Paterson as the Pioneers put up seven goals in the opening frame. Matt Nigro (Morganville, N.J.) got the scoring started when he took a cross from Boucher and blasted it past the Regis keeper for a 1-0 lead. Boucher then scored three straight times, once on a pretty through-ball from Anthony Ferrer (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.), to give the Pioneers a 4-0 lead they would not relinquish.
Matt Lopuski (Montville, N.J.) would score on a cross from Domenick Candelieri (Pennsauken, N.J.) in the 21st minute while Anthony Ferrer and Candelieri would each add unassisted tallies before the end of the half to stake the Pioneers to a 7-0 lead. Marcus Rouse (Rahway, N.J.) would add the final goal of the day, scoring off a deflected ball, to round out the scoring and give William Paterson the 8-0 victory.
Regis only mustered five shots, including only one in the second half, on the William Paterson defense including a pair of attempts by Ricardo Arguetta (Los Angeles, Calif.). Andrew LaMacchia (Lynn, Mass.) took the loss for Regis while making four saves. Stefan Todorovic (Lynn, Mass.) took over for LaMacchia over the last 68 minutes and made five saves.
William Paterson's Zach Collins (Bayville, N.J.) made a pair of saves in picking up the win for the Pioneers. Ben Horowitz (Spotswood, N.J.) played the entire second half and only faced one attempt from the Pride.
The Pride return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Emerson College in a non-conference bout at 5:30 p.m. William Paterson takes on New York University in a home contest on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m.
