Men’s Lacrosse Topples Former NECC Foe

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's lacrosse team defeated former New England Collegiate Conference foe Becker Thursday night in a non-conference matchup, 11-5.

Michael Tremblay (Arlington, Mass.) had a hat trick while Tucker Cherry (Franklin, Mass.), Zach Leighton (Wilmington, Mass.), and Michael Daras (Danvers, Mass.) all scored twice. The Pride goalkeepers, JJ LaRose (Litchfield, N.H.)and Tommy Murphy (Concord, Mass.) would combine for a total of 11 saves on 16 shots on goal (68.8%).

Cherry found the back of the net off of a feed by Leighton 6:31 into the contest.  Daras would strike a few minutes later off another assist from Leighton giving the Pride the 2-0 lead.  Brian Wagner (Melrose, Mass.) would find the back of the net with 1:22 remaining in the first expanding the Pride lead, expanding the Pride to 3-0 going into the second quarter. 

In the second, Becker's Tyler Forest would strike 19 seconds into the period to shrink the Hawk deficit.  Leighton would then score his first goal of the game exactly three minutes later. The Pride would score four straight, including the Leighton goal, before Forest would score again for Becker as time expired in the half, with the Pride still leading 7-2.

The third quarter saw Regis increase their lead, scoring the first three goals of the second half.  Forest would score his third goal of the game off an assist from Nathan Cornejo with 1:55 remaining in the quarter to make the score 10-3.

Cameron Sangster would get on the scoresheet with a goal with 6:58 remaining in the game.  The Pride and Hawks would trade goals to finish the game in Regis' favor, 11-5.

Regis won the faceoff battle with Brendon Donahue (Lynn, Mass.) going 11-of-18, being the only member of the Pride to take faceoffs in the contest.  Regis went 29-of-33 (87.9%) in their clearance attempts while Becker went 20-of-29 (68.9%) on their chances.

The Pride outshot the Hawks 58-33, with Becker goalkeeper Daniel Whittenburg saving 23 of the shots that he faced.

Becker (0-3, 0-0 NECC) will play on Saturday, Mar. 23 against another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent, Rivier.  They then play at Salem State on Tuesday, Mar. 26. 

Regis (2-2, 0-2 GNAC) visits Emmanuel on Tuesday, Mar. 26 to take on the Saints in a GNAC tilt at 7 p.m.  They will then host Saint Joseph's (Me.) on Saturday, Mar. 30 for their second consecutive conference match.
