NEW LONDON, Conn.— D.J. Barrile (Medford, Mass.) posted 19 saves but it came in a losing effort as the Regis (Mass.) men's lacrosse team fell 16-3 to Connecticut College, Wednesday 16-3 at Freeman Field.
The Camels (7-6) will now turn their attention towards a showdown against second ranked Bates College Saturday. The Pride fell to 4-9 with the loss but can carry momentum into their next contest after playing a much better second half.
Sophomore Ted Kasper (Timonium, Md.) and Jon Creed (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored two goals each in the win for the Camels. Senior Kevin Schirmacher (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Timothy Seibel (Wakefield, Mass.) both finished with a goal and two assists for Head Coach Dave Cornell's Camels. Matt Parent (Belchertown, Mass.) and Brendan O'Connell (Burlington, Vt.) registered a goal and an assist each for the winning side.
Senior Mack Dowling (Darien, Conn.) was 10-for-11 at the X with a pair of ground balls. Ryan Blair (Garden City, N.Y.) won 11-for-12 of his battles in the trenches. Reid Leveilee (Longmeadow, Mass.) corralled four ground balls.
Hunter Rosenthall (Chatham, Mass.) posted the victory, making one save in 21 minutes of action. Jameson Hill (Wilton, Conn.) made three saves in the second quarter. Colin Smith (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) turned aside two shots in the third before Matt Andrews (Smithfield, R.I.) put the finishing touches on the victory with his two saves in the fourth quarter.
Regis was led by senior net-minder D.J. Barrile who collected 13 of his 19 saves in the second half. He added five ground balls to his stat line. Junior AJ Karofsky (Barrington, R.I.) had a goal and an assist for the visitors. Senior Brandon Mehler (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and junior Danny Rancano (Miami, Fla.) both contributed with goals for Regis.
The Camels raced out to a 9-0 lead in the opening quarter and never really looked back. Trotsky scored three of his six markers in the first. With 1:43 remaining, the Camels took advantage of an unsettled situation. A.J. Vazquez (Bedford, Mass.) assisted Trotsky for a goal to put the Camels on top 7-0. Just 59 seconds later, Seibel added an unassisted marker to make it an 8-0 contest. Then, with two seconds left, Trotsky completed his first quarter hat-trick with an unassisted marker.
The Camels out-scored the Pride 4-0 in the second quarter and scored the first two goals of the third before Mehler finally got the visitors on the board with 6:13 into the third quarter. Barrile played a terrific third quarter, coming up with seven saves for the visitors. He added six more stops in the fourth quarter. But the Camels were in control from the get go and were easily able to hold on for the 16-3 triumph.
Connecticut College enjoyed a 58-to-12 advantage on the shot chart and held a 41-16 edge in ground balls.
