NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Regis College could not keep up with the offensive output of Albertus Magnus College, as the Falcons defeated the Pride, 90-69, Thursday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the AMC Athletic Center.
Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored a career-high 32 points, the second-highest single-game scoring total in program history and the first time a Pride player has reached the 30-point mark in one game in almost six full years. He tied his own Regis single-game record for most made field goals, going 13-for-20 from the field, plus he pulled down eight rebounds and blocked four shots.
Albertus Magnus (12-7, 4-2 GNAC) took the lead 30 seconds into the game on a three-pointer by Tyreek Perkins, and the Falcons never relinquished that advantage. After Ademola made two free throws to pull within one, Albertus Magnus went on an 18-6 scoring run, led by Davon Warner with eight points, to extend its lead to 25-12 midway through the first half.
Regis scored six unanswered points, starting with a three-pointer from Jordan Seldon (Dorchester, Mass.), to close its deficit to 10 points, but Albertus Magnus rattled off eight straight points, half of them from Ryan Pittman, to increase its lead once again, eventually going into halftime ahead, 45-27.
The Pride opened the second half with six straight points in two minutes, punctuated by a dunk from Afonja, but Albertus Magnus prevented Regis from coming any closer the rest of the way. The Falcons scored 45 points in each half as they shot 47.2 percent (34-of-72) from the field and 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free throw line.
Seldon finished the game with 15 points, six rebounds, and two assists, while Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 10 points and Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) contributed seven points and six rebounds off the bench. The Pride shot 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the field and 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from the free throw line.
Perkins led the Falcons with 20 points, plus he pulled down seven rebounds and dished out three assists. The Albertus Magnus bench combined for 44 points, led by Warner and Rayshawn Brewer with 11 points apiece. Michael Richardson finished with 10 points, and Andrew Rice contributed nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Regis (8-13, 3-4 GNAC) hosts Rivier University in the first game of a basketball doubleheader Saturday, Feb. 2, with a 1 p.m. tipoff. Shortly before the start, the Pride will honor their seniors in the annual Senior Day presentation.
