BOSTON – Regis College lost to Suffolk University, 82-52, Wednesday evening in a non-conference men's collegiate basketball game at Regan Gymnasium.
In his first start of the season, Juvens Dalger (Oakland Park, Fla.) led the Pride with 13 points and six rebounds. Senior Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished with 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists, while Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) contributed nine points off the bench.
Regis made its first four field goal attempts of the game to race out to an 8-2 lead two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. Suffolk used the long distance shot to gain momentum, hitting eight three-pointers in the first half, including four three-pointers during a 20-5 scoring run as the Rams eventually extended their lead into double digits, taking a 38-25 advantage into halftime.
Suffolk (8-5) put the game away early in the second half by putting together a 9-2 scoring run over the span of two-and-a-half minutes, featuring three-pointers by Alex Jacovides and Jim Djema. After a brief 7-2 scoring run for the Pride, led by Afonja with five points, the Rams increased the eventual margin of victory thanks to another 20-5 scoring run in the final six minutes of the contest.
Jacovides led the Rams with 17 points as he hit 5-of-7 shots from behind the three-point line, while Djema finished with 14 points and four rebounds. Brendan Mulson scored 11 points, and Steven DiPrizio and Michael Hagopian contributed 10 points apiece.
As a team, Suffolk shot 61.7 percent (29-of-47) from the field, including 13-of-23 from behind the three-point line, and 91.7 percent (11-of-12) from the free throw line. The Rams won the rebounding battle, 31-29, and dished out 21 assists while committing just 14 turnovers.
The Pride shot just 33.3 percent (20-of-60) from the field, but they made 76.9 percent (10-of-13) of their free throw attempts. Regis did pull down 11 offensive rebounds, leading to 11 second chance points.
Regis (5-9) opens its Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule with a home game against Norwich Saturday, Jan. 12, beginning at 3 p.m. The Cadets will be looking for their first league win of the season after losses to Anna Maria and Johnson & Wales.
