STANDISH, Maine – Seven players reached double figures in scoring for Regis College as the Pride shot 50 percent from the field on their way to a school record for points in a single game, defeating Rivier University 103-64 Sunday in the third game of the Catholic Classic hosted by Saint Joseph's College at the Harold Alfond Center.
The 103 points are the most scored by Regis in a single game, breaking the previous mark of 101 points set against Anna Maria Feb. 20, 2010. The Pride also pulled down 66 rebounds, the second-highest total in a game in program history behind only a 68-rebound effort against Pine Manor Nov. 19, 2016.
Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Pride with his second career double-double, posting career-high totals with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Milik Wallace (Hinesville, Ga.) hit three three-pointers on his way to a career-high total of 13 points.
Rivier (1-11) scored the first five points of the game on a layup by Tarik Rivers and a three-pointer from Jalen Watson. Down 12-6, Regis put together a 7-1 scoring run to tie the game at 13-13, but the Raiders answered back with five straight points to retake the lead at 18-13 seven minutes into the contest.
The Pride were behind 27-23 when they took control of the game, rattling off a 28-7 scoring run over the final seven minutes of the first half. Wallace hit all three of his three-pointers during that stretch as Regis went into the locker room at halftime ahead, 51-34.
Regis put the game away with a 16-2 scoring run early in the second half, led by Trinidad with six points during that stretch. The Pride continued to pressure Rivier into missed shots and turnovers, putting together an 18-2 scoring run later in the half on their way to the record-setting point total.
Josh Germain (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) collected 11 points, five rebounds, and a career-high nine assists. Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, R.I.) finished with 10 points, two rebounds, two assists, three steals, and two blocked shots, while Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) also ended up with 10 points, two rebounds, and two blocked shots. Joining the active roster after the fall semester, Devante Thompson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also scored 10 points, plus he grabbed four rebounds and dished out five assists.
For Rivier, Nate Hale scored 14 points and was 5-for-9 from the floor in 21 minutes, while Issaiah Chappell added 10 points and four rebounds. Rivier shot just 31.9 percent (23-for-72) from the field, including 9-for-31 from behind the three-point line, and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line.
The Pride hit 35-of-70 shots from the field, including 8-of-19 from behind the three-point line. Regis continually drew fouls on the Raiders, earning 43 free throw attempts, making 25 of them. Of the Pride's 66 rebounds, 26 of them came on the offensive side of the court, leading to 25 second chance points.
Regis (5-6) opens 2019 with a home game against Fitchburg State Wednesday, Jan. 2, beginning at 6 p.m. at Higgins Court.
