Regis Men’s Basketball Loses to Baruch

NEW YORK CITY – Regis College lost to Baruch College, 71-52, Saturday night in the second game of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by New York University at the Hunter College Sportsplex.

Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.), led the Pride with nine points and seven rebounds, Michael Carucci (Suffield, Conn.) contributed seven points and three steals, and five other Regis players collected six points apiece. The Pride could not get their offense going, shooting just 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, including 2-of-16 from behind the three-point line, and 61.5 percent (16-of-26) from the free throw line.

After Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) scored on the opening possession of the game, Baruch rattled off 21 straight points to open a 19-point advantage nine minutes into the contest. Layups by Wedderburn and Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) late in the half closed the Regis deficit to 14 at 29-15, but three-pointers by William Sixsmith, Bryler Paige, and Joseph Zecchino helped Baruch extend its lead back to 19 at 38-19 heading into halftime.

Baruch (2-1) scored 10 unanswered points over a two-minute stretch in the second half, including six points from Paige, to open its biggest lead of the night at 55-27. Regis was able to chip away at the Bearcat lead during the rest of the game, bringing it back down to 19 as each team scored 33 points in the second half.

Paige led the Bearcats with 13 points, and Allen Villar finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. As a team, Baruch shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field, including 7-of-19 from behind the three-point line, and 59.3 percent (16-of-27) from the free throw line.

Regis (1-2) takes on Sarah Lawrence in the third-place game of the tournament Sunday, Nov. 18, starting at 12 p.m. The Gryphons lost to NYU, 82-66, earlier Saturday to fall to 1-1 so far this season.
