Men's Basketball Falls At JWU In League Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - With an outside shot to host the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament, the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team could not do its part, losing at Johnson & Wales (RI) 86-67 in the Pride's conference finale on Tuesday.

With the victory, the Wildcats locked up the number two seed in next week's GNAC Tournament. Johnson & Wales will host a quarterfinal game on February 20 and a semifinal game on February 22 should it advance.

JWU used a 19-7 run halfway through the first period to open a 24-11 advantage on a Donovian Maxfield three pointer. The Wildcats took a 42-25 lead into the half. An Ademola Afonja dunk cut the JWU lead to 48-32, but the Wildcats responded with a 20-4 run to put the game out of reach.

The Wildcats forced the Pride into 21 turnovers, which Johnson & Wales converted into 30 points.

Leading all players with 25 points was the Wildcats' Jarell Lawson for his fourth 20-point game of the year. Brian Hogan-Gary just missed a double-double with 19 points and eight rebounds. Rookie Nate Patenaude pulled in a game-high 10 rebounds.

Regis was led by Afonja with 10 points. Juvens Dalger and Devante Thompson came off the bench to score nine points each with Shawn Wedderburn snaring nine rebounds.

The Pride wrap up the regular season with a non-conference matchup against Pine Manor on Thursday, Feb. 15. Tipoff at Higgins Court is set for 6:00 p.m.
