WESTON, Mass. – Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y) delivered a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead a well-balanced scoring effort and lift the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team to a 65-54 win over Suffolk in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Higgins Court.
Jordan Seldon (Dorchester, Mass.) put up a team-high 13 points for the Pride who held off a late Suffolk rally to improve to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC. Jawaun Lewis (Duval County, Fla.) and Roger Hamel (Huntington Beach, Calif.) both added 10 points.
Michael Hagopian (Watertown, Mass.) put up a game-high 19 points on 7-14 shooting to pace the Rams (7-6, 2-2 GNAC). George Grillakis (Lowell, Mass.) added 13 points.
The Pride looked to prime to cruise to the win after Marc Trinidad's (Bronx, N.Y.) layup with just under 10 minutes to play put his team up 52-34. Suffolk chipped away, cutting the Regis lead to 54-48 on the heels of a 9-0 run capped by a Hagopian three pointer. Down the stretch though it was the Pride who hit its free throws to hold on for the win.
The early minutes featured a defensive struggle with Suffolk Hagopian connecting on a three pointer with 15:43 to play in the half for the game's first basket. Seldon scored in the paint for the Pride seconds later to even the score at 4-4.
Shawn Wedderburn's (Bronx, N.Y.) layup put the Pride up 13-10 with just over 10 minutes to play but Hagopian's three pointer capped a 7-2 run to put the Rams up 17-15. Regis would finish the half on an 8-0 spurt capped by a Wedderburn layup and carried a 28-21 lead into the break.
Next up for the Pride is a trip to Rivier in another GNAC tilt this Thursday, Jan. 18. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Suffolk hosts Emmanuel the same day also with a 7:00 p.m. tip.
