NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team faced a daunting task at defending league champion Albertus Magnus and came up short in an 88-58 loss to the Falcons in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday at Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Center.
The Pride (3-4, 1-1 GNAC) was largely held in check with Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) and Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) as Regis's leading scorers each with eight points. Trinidad added eight rebounds for a solid performance off the bench.
AMC had a pair of players in double figures led by Jaqhawn Walters's 25 points on 12-18 shooting to go along with nine rebounds. Mason Jones added 14 points and five assists.
The Pride won the rebound battle 44-40 but shot under 17% (3-18) from beyond the arc and 56.5% (13-23) from the charity stripe.
Albertus Magnus (3-1, 1-0 GNAC) blew open the game early taking a 20-9 lead midway through the first, but a 16-7 run by the Pride brought the score to within a basket, 27-25, with 3:42 left in the half. AMC responded back pushing its lead to double-digits and would hold a 39-28 lead into halftime.
Regis continued to chip away at the Falcon lead and found themselves within seven on a made layup from Juvens Dalger (Oakland Park, Fla.) with 18:31 remaining to play. Albertus would settle down, however, and expand the lead to as many as 32 points with 1:35 left in regulation.
Regis won't retake the court until Saturday, Dec. 30 when its opens the Trinity Holiday Invitational against Westfield State at 7:00 p.m.
