Men's Basketball Tripped Up At Daniel Webster

NASHUA – Jordan Seldon (Everett, Mass.) matched his career high of 25 points but it wasn't enough as the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team lost to Daniel Webster for only the third time in 14 all-time meetings, falling 88-71 in New England Collegiate Conference action Saturday at Mario Vagge Gymnasium. Leading by just one at the break (34-33), the Eagles shot 59-percent in the second, outscoring the Pride 54-38.

Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a strong overall performance for the Pride (3-4, 1-1 NECC), chipping in 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Julio Gulay (Bronx, N.Y.) posted 18 points with Chris Leak, Jr. (New Haven, Conn.) adding six points and five rebounds.

DWC (4-1, 1-0 NECC) trailed as late as 16:15 of the second (41-38) but took what would prove to be the lead for good on a Jared Harrington (Upper Marlboro, Md.) layup with 15:31 remaining for a 43-41 lead but didn't fully take control until a key-six minute stretch from the 12 minute to six-minute mark of the second in which the hosts held Regis to just two points on free throws, garnered three steals, and saw the Pride miss on five consecutive shots.

Ray Farmer (Nashua) posted 13 points for the winners as he inched closer to 1,000 points for his career (23) and added a team-high eight boards, Harrington posted 11 points with three assists, and Alex Cruz (Hartford, Conn.) provided a big spark off the bench, finishing with 11 points, two boards and a steal.

Antwaun Boyd (Stamford, Conn.), Michael Campbell (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and Angelo Adon (Silver Spring, Md.) chipped in with eight points apiece and Tommy Organ posted seven.

DWC was decisive around the rim and in the paint. The Eagles outrebounded the Pride 45-27 including 14 on the offensive glass leading to 14 second-chance points and dominated in the paint, outscoring the Pride 40-18. DWC also overwhelmed the opposition with a 40-7 advantage in bench points.

The Eagles actually trailed by as many as seven early on and were behind by six (15-9) at the midpoint of the first before a layup and three from Caudill followed by a Boys layup gave the hosts their first lead at 16-15 with 9:12 left.

The lead grew to nine following buckets from Cruz, Campbell and Harrison before Regis closed the half on a 15-7 run for a one-point game at the break.

The Pride will have a good chunk of time off before returning to the hardwood at the Salem State Holiday Classic. Regis will play Salem State on Dec. 29 at 7:00 p.m. then face Endicott the following day at 5:00 p.m.
