WESTON, Mass. – Regis College picked up its fourth-straight win with an 87-75 victory over Daniel Webster College on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's basketball action. The Pride move to 7-10 overall and 6-3 in the NECC, while the Eagles drop to 12-5 and 5-3 in league games.
Osanto Marc Jr. (Kissimmee, Fla.) finished with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds to lead four players in double-figures for the Pride. Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) added 18 points, and Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) had 16 points, five rebounds, and a pair of steals. Chris Keaton (Beverly, Mass.) connected on 4-of-4 three pointers and scored 14 points in the opening half on the way to 15 points in the win.
Daniel Webster's Kevin Perez (Nashua, N.H.) led the Eagles with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Ryan Gauthier (Nashua, N.H.) added 15 points in the setback. Ray Farmer (Nashua, N.H.) added 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Daris Cosby (Albany, N.Y.) had 12 points and two steals.
A pair of early freethrows from Jean-Gilles sparked a 7-0 run for the Pride that gave Regis a 9-2 lead with 17:04 remaining in the first half. Chris Leak Jr. (New Haven, Conn.) scored a minute later to extend the run and give the Pride a nine point advantage, but Daniel Webster's Daris Cosby went on a personal 5-0 run and Ryan Gauthier connected on back-to-back triples to make it an 11-0 stretch and put the Eagles on top 13-11.
Chris Keaton put the home team back on top by one with a three as the shot clock expired, and Jordan Monts (Springfield, Mass.) hit a quick jumper to stake the Pride to a three point lead at the 11:58 mark. David Feinstein (Londonderry, N.H.) connected on a triple to tie the game for DWC, but Keaton buried another deep three to keep Regis in the lead. Cosby hit a three on the ensuing Eagles possession, but Keaton hit his third three of the half to answer and keep the Pride advantage at three.
Following a pair of Osanto Marc Jr. freethrows, Keaton hit another three from the corner, his fourth of the half, as the Pride led 28-22 with 7:45 remaining. The two teams traded baskets before a tip-in from Marc Jr. gave the Pride their largest lead of the half at 36-26, and Chambers kept it a 10 point lead with a steal and fastbreak layup headed into the final two minutes. DWC's Kevin Perez would score the final four points of the period as the Eagles entered the break trailing 38-32.
Regis led by as many as 12 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Eagles chipped away and following a Perez jumper, DWC trailed 46-40 with 15:54 to play. A Ray Farmer layup at the 13:30 mark cut the deficit to five, but Chambers connected on a jumper and Marc Jr. scored a three-point play to put Regis back on top by 10. A pair of Aiden Collins (Paterson, N.J.) freethrows made it a 57-51 game, but Leak Jr. hit two freethrows and connected on a jumper to give Regis the 61-51 advantage.
Daniel Webster answered with an 8-2 spurt capped off by a Gauthier jumper to make it a 63-59 ballgame with 7:26 to play. Chambers connected on a three pointer on the next possession that led to a 7-0 run for the Pride to take a 70-59 lead. Farmer continued to work inside and made it seven point game with just over three minutes to play, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get as the Pride went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe down the stretch to hang on for the 87-75 win.
Regis won the rebounding battle 35-25 but lost the turnover battle with 15 missteps, which DWC turned into 18 points off turnovers, compared to just nine for the Eagles. The Pride shot 53.8% from the field, going 28-of-52 from the floor and 6-of-12 from three. Daniel Webster shot an efficient 44.8% from the floor (26-of-58), but only hit 8-of-28 three-pointers in the setback.
The Crimson and Gold are back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Wheelock College for an 8:00 p.m. NECC contest. Daniel Webster will try and rebound on Thursday night as well, hosting Mitchell College at 7:00 p.m.
