Pride Reach End of Road in Tourney Loss

STANDISH, Maine – Regis College battled the entire night, but the Pride could not generate any offense against Saint Joseph's College, and the Monks pulled away for a 5-0 victory Wednesday night in a semifinal of the 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Field Hockey Tournament at the SJC Athletic Complex.

Saint Joseph's immediately went to work, taking 11 shots in the first period as it drew five penalty corners. With less than five minutes remaining in the opening quarter, the Monks attempted to score off a penalty corner, but Sarah Tetrault (North Easton, Mass.) was able to make a defensive save. However, the home team was awarded a penalty stroke, and Alexandra Belaire converted to put the Monks on top.

The Monks maintained possession through most of the second quarter, but the Regis defense held them off, allowing only three penalty corners and two shots in the period. The Pride finally put together some offense early in the third period, drawing two penalty corners, but neither shot during those opportunities were on net.

Saint Joseph's reasserted its presence in the 35th minute, drawing another penalty corner, with Logan Champlin picking up a goal off an assist from Belaire. Just over one minute later, Champlin would provide the assist as Alexa Gutowski closed out a penalty corner play with the Monks' third goal of the match.

With three minutes remaining in the third period, Megan Quirion inserted a penalty corner into the scoring arc, where Belaire was waiting as she earned her second goal of the match. Early in the fourth period, the Monks would run another successful penalty corner play, as Kylee Veilleux scored off Belaire's second assist of the contest.

Saint Joseph's, the top seed in the tournament and ranked fourth in the region by the NCAA, controlled play, outshooting Regis 19-3 and drawing 15 penalty corners while allowing only five Pride penalty corners. Regis goalie Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) finished with five saves, while Monk keeper Alexandria Simpson earned the shutout without needing to make a save.

Regis concludes the 2019 season with an 8-11 overall record, tying program single-season records for most shutouts with six and longest winning streak at five matches.
