PAXTON, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team is moving on to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference semifinals after defeating the AMCATS of Anna Maria 1-0 Saturday.
The fifth seed in the tournament due to a five-way tiebreaker, Regis has now won five straight contests dating back to their match with Colby-Sawyer Oct. 19, their longest winning streak since the 2017 season.
In the first quarter, both teams struggled to find a way past the opposing defense, with only two shots on net registered in the period, both by the Pride. The quarter remained scoreless with the help of a defensive save by the AMCATS' Emily Randall that kept a shot by Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) out of the net.
The Pride managed to break through in the second quarter after Blaha collected the ball in open space and broke towards the end line. Blaha then lofted a shot over the shoulder of the goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the net for her 17th goal of the season.
Blaha had two shots on net early in the third quarter that AMCAT goalkeeper Hannah Tobey was able to stop, keeping Regis' lead at one.
Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) was challenged off a penalty corner in the fourth quarter with the AMCATS putting a pair of shots on net. Winkin made both saves to help the Pride hold on for the victory.
The Pride controlled the tempo of the game earning 11 penalty corners to Anna Maria's one. They also outshot the AMCATS 10-4, with seven of the Pride's shots on target.
Regis (8-10, 4-4 GNAC) will play top-seeded Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the GNAC semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 6, at a time to be determined
