HENNIKER, N.H. – Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) was outstanding in net with eight saves as the Regis College field hockey team used a two-goal third quarter to push past the Pilgrims of New England College 2-1 at Don Melander Field Thursday evening.
Nora Buck (Shawmut, Maine) picked up her second goal of the season, Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.) scored her first goal of the year, and Mary Costantino (Abington, Mass.) picked up an assist.
After a series of Pride shots in the first quarter, the Pilgrims went into the attacking area where Winkin was unable to save the first shot she saw of the night from Brittany Tierney.
New England College was awarded a penalty corner 3:41 into the third quarter. Tierney, Audrey Carr, and Leah Foster all had shot attempts off the set piece, but Winkin stood tall, saving all three attempts in four seconds.
With 5:45 remaining in the third quarter the Pride tied the match after Costantino found Buck inside the scoring area. Buck then fired a shot into the lower-left corner of the net.
The Pride were awarded their third penalty corner of the game with four seconds remaining in the third. As time expired on the clock, a foul was called inside the scoring area, awarding the Pride a penalty stroke. O'Brien took the stroke for the Pride, which initially made contact with the Pilgrim's goalkeeper before going into the upper left corner of the net, giving the Pride a 2-1 lead.
Regis trailed New England College in penalty corners 7-3, but Winkin posted the higher save percentage, saving 88.9 (8 of 9) percent of the shots she faced, while Ellie Philiben saved 50 percent (2 of 4).
New England College (4-2, 0-0 NECC) will face two more Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponents in Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, Sept. 25 and Anna Maria on Tuesday, Oct. 1 before starting their conference slate.
Regis (2-4, 0-1 GNAC) plays host to Manhattanville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21. They will then have a week before their next match against GNAC opponent Simmons as part of Regis Fest on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 11 a.m.
