Pride Field Hockey Forces Overtime Before Falling, 4-3

HENNIKER, N.H. – Regis College put together a second half rally to come back from a 3-0 deficit and force overtime, but New England College scored midway through the first overtime period to pull out a 4-3 victory Wednesday night in a non-conference collegiate field hockey match at Don Melander Field.

In the 44th minute, Alycia LeConche (Simsbury, Conn.) sent a pass into the circle, where Mackenzie Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) corralled it and converted on the shot for her second goal of the season. Regis kept the offensive pressure going, as Mary Costantino (Abington, Mass.) found Hope Celli (Pembroke, Mass.) for her third goal of the year in the 50th minute to pull the Pride within one at 3-2.

In the 57th minute, during a scramble in front of Pilgrim goalie Christine McNeil, Celli gained control of the ball and guided it into the net for the game-tying tally. The Pride had an opportunity to take the lead two minutes later, but a shot by Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) was turned away by McNeil.

The Pilgrims won the right to possess the ball at the start of overtime and rarely gave it up, taking six shots in the extra period. After a shot by Taylor Daileanes was kicked away by Regis goalie Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine), Brittany Tierney picked up the rebound and found the back of the net for her 14th goal of the year and the game-winning tally.

Winkin came on at the start of the second half, replacing starting goalie Erin Moore (Rosedale, Md.), and made two saves, both in the overtime session. McNeil finished with nine saves as she earned the victory.

New England College (5-7) quickly jumped on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the match as a scoring attempt by Tierney was redirected into the net by Daileanes. Just 13 seconds later, Daileanes would strike again, this time off an assist by Krissie Borrero, to give the Pilgrims a 2-0 advantage.

Midway through the first half, Emilia Battista sent a pass from the right side into the middle of the scoring arc, where Daileanes was stationed. Daileanes would convert on the shot to complete the hat trick and pick up her 11th goal of the season, giving New England College a 3-0 lead that it would maintain through the rest of the first half.

Regis (2-8, 1-3 GNAC) will play four of its final five regular season matches at home, beginning Saturday, Oct. 13, against league foe Anna Maria at 12 p.m. at Regis Stadium.
