FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The Regis College field hockey team took the early lead, but Framingham State battled back and then scored at the end of the overtime period to defeat the Pride, 3-2, Tuesday night in a non-conference collegiate match at Maple Street Field.
The Pride opened up the scoring in the 10th minute when Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, NY) carried the ball about fifteen yards before beating the Rams keeper. Regis doubled its lead when Yvonne Abate (Easton, Mass.) tipped in a strike from Callahan in the 19th minute.
Framingham State (1-0) scored late in the opening frame when Jordyn O'Boyle scored off a pass from Meaghann Ackerman. The Rams tied the score early in the second stanza when Caitlin Baril scored off her own rebound.
The score remained tied at 2-2 through the remaining 27 minutes of regulation, forcing the extra session. Just prior to time expiring in the first overtime the Rams were awarded a corner. Bailey Donelly sent in a pass to Ackerman who blasted a strike from the top of the arc.
Hope Winkin (Winslow, Maine) started in net for the Pride and made six saves before being replaced at halftime by Erin Moore (Rosedale, Md.), who made eight saves in the second half and overtime. Grace Pushor played the final 45 minutes in net for the Rams, not allowing a goal while making 10 saves to help the home team's comeback effort.
Callahan led Regis with seven shots, including five shots on goal, while Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.) contributed three shots, all on goal. Framingham State outshot Regis, 26-20, led by Ackerman with 12 total shots, half of them on goal.
Regis (0-2) hosts Becker in its home opener Thursday, Sept. 6, starting at 7 p.m. at Regis Stadium. The Hawks are 0-1 after losing to Lasell last Saturday, 6-1.
