PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Ashley Chipman (Stoughton, Mass.) scored 1:22 into overtime on Saturday afternoon as the Regis (Mass.) field hockey team nabbed a 2-1 win over Johnson & Wales in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
With the win, the Pride's win streak moves to five games and their record to 7-4 on the season, 2-3 in GNAC play. The Wildcats fall to 2-8 with the loss, including 1-4 in the GNAC.
Johnson & Wales didn't waste time getting on the board in the first half. Giovanna Ciavardoni (Latham, N.Y.) got a pass from Shaina Thompson (Delmar, Del.) and put it in the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
The score was still 1-0 JWU in the 64th minute when the Pride got their long-awaited equalizer. On a shot from outside the circle by junior Hailee Forrest (Amherst, N.H.), classmate Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) redirected the ball into the cage to even the score. The goal was Callahan's fourth of the season, and briefly tied her for the team lead in goals with Chipman.
The Pride put their first opportunity of the overtime period to good use, as Chipman and Callahan escaped on a 2-on-2 on the Wildcat net in the second minute of the overtime. Chipman flipped a shot towards the cage which took a deflection off the leg of a Wildcat defender and through the five hole of Johnson & Wales goalkeeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.) to give the sophomore the game-winner.
Nolan was credited with the loss for the Wildcats, turning a way a pair of Pride shots in the defeat. The Pride's Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) picked up win number seven of the season for the Pride, making five saves.
Next up for the Pride, the team will step away from GNAC action by hosting New England College on Wednesday at Regis Stadium.
