Field Hockey Beats Rivier in Penalty Shootout Thriller

WESTON, Mass. - Junior Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) scored in the eighth round of the penalty stroke shootout on Saturday afternoon to give the Regis (Mass.) field hockey team a 1-0 win over Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Regis Stadium.

With the win, the Pride picks up its first GNAC win of the season to improve to 1-3 in conference and 5-4 overall. The Raiders continue to seek its first conference win, moving to 0-4 in the GNAC and 1-8 overall.

The game went the entire 100 minutes without a ball entering either net, thanks in part to stellar goalkeeping from the Pride's Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) and Rivier's Emily Foster (West Lebanon, N.H.). Malcolm made four saves in regulation and one in the overtime, but it was Foster who stole the show on the day. After making five saves in regulation time, Foster turned away 11 shots off Pride sticks in the two overtime periods to force the game to penalty strokes.

Rivier's Mikayla Ramsdell (Salem, N.H.) opened the scoring in the shootout in the second round, juking out Malcolm, slipping left and sliding a shot into the open cage. Two more Pride players would miss and the shootout came down to Pride junior Yvonne Abate (Easton, Mass.). Needing a goal in the fifth round to keep the shootout going, Abate converted to extend the game. Three rounds later, Callahan deked around Foster and fired a shot into the cage to give the Pride the victory.

Both teams will face Framingham State University in their next games, starting with the Pride, who hosts the Rams on Tuesday afternoon at Regis Stadium. The Raiders travel to Framingham on Thursday for a 4:00 p.m. start.
