CALLAHAN’S STRONG SECOND STANZA POWERS PRIDE TO WIN
Reigning New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) used a second half hat trick to spark Regis’ offense as the Pride defeated conference rival Daniel Webster College 3-0 on a chilly Wednesday evening at Regis Stadium. With the victory, the Crimson and Gold improve to 6-7, 4-2 NECC on the campaign while the Eagles remain winless at 0-8, 0-4 NECC.
WESTON, Mass. – Reigning New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) used a second half hat trick to spark Regis' offense as the Pride defeated conference rival Daniel Webster College 3-0 on a chilly Wednesday evening at Regis Stadium. With the victory, the Crimson and Gold improve to 6-7, 4-2 NECC on the campaign while the Eagles remain winless at 0-8, 0-4 NECC.
After a scoreless first half, Callahan opened up the scoring 13 minutes into the second stanza. The ball was crossed into the Daniel Webster defensive zone and bounced around off numerous athletes sticks. Callahan corralled the rock and chipped a shot past Eagles goaltender Michelle Davis (McKinney, Texas) for her second score of the season.
Freshman defender Yvonne Abate (Easton, Mass.) found her classmate six minutes later as she laid a through pass in front of the cage which left Callahan alone for a one-on-one chance with the goalie and buried a shot in the bottom of the net increasing the Pride advantage to 2-0.
With two minutes remaining in the contest, Callahan completed the hat trick by following the rebound of Abate's shot and rifled a one timer attempt into the bottom center of the net.
The Eagles had two chances to draw first blood in the game. During the 19th minute freshman forward Brittany Tierney (Napean, Ontario) had the first opportunity as she received a pass in the box and slapped a shot that went off Pride goalkeeper Raegan Heck's (Phillipston, Mass.) pad. Sophomore midfielder Madison Platte (Manchester, N.H.) followed the rebound and blasted another shot towards Heck, but was stifled by the senior captain.
Daniel Webster's best chance came 11 minutes into the second period as Tierney dangled through the Pride defense and fired the ball towards Heck, but was turned away for the second time in the contest.
Raegan Heck recorded her third shutout victory of the season, making three saves in the win while Michelle Davis secured 17 shots during the setback. The Eagles played the whole match down two players and were outshot 43-3 by the Crimson and Gold.
Regis and Daniel Webster return to action on Saturday, October 17th with the Pride traveling to Wheelock for a 12:30 contest with the Wildcats while the Eagles head home to Nashua for a date with Bay Path at 3:30 p.m.
