Class of 2021 Spotlight – Assistant Coaches/Staff
WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College athletics department expresses a significant amount of gratitude to its assistant coaches and staff members who took on important roles over the past two years while pursuing postgraduate degrees. The 10 young men and women who have completed their time in these positions have represented Pride Athletics with class and respect, and for that they are to be commended.
Megan Albertsen assisted in overseeing the women's lacrosse team's performance both on the field and in the classroom throughout the past two years. Albertsen also played a major role in bringing Noelle Lambert, a former teammate at UMass Lowell training to qualify for the Summer Paralympic Games, to campus in February 2020 to talk about establishing The Born to Run Foundation. Albertsen received her master's degree in strategic sports communications and is aiming to remain in coaching at the collegiate level.
Warren Backman showed his passion for coaching as the assistant within the men's soccer program over the past two years. Besides his efforts on the pitch with the current Pride players, he also worked hard to recruit new student-athletes to the program. In addition, he was a member of the game operations staff, assisting at other Pride athletic events. Earning his master's degree in strategic sports communications, Backman has accepted a position as an assistant coach at a collegiate soccer program.
Ben Colello started at Regis for the 2019 cross country season, helping the team see success through event victories and school records. He oversaw the sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers during the 2019-20 indoor track and field season, culminating in three individual GNAC titles. Colello helped lead the Pride cross country and track and field programs on an interim basis during the 2020-21 academic year and has taken over as the permanent head coach starting in late May. He received his master's degree in strategic sports communications.
Andrew Holmes brought significant experience to the Regis men's basketball program, helping the squad qualify for the GNAC Tournament in the 2019-20 season by winning five of six games. He continued to work with the players during the team's practice activities this past spring, plus he assisted with game operations duties over the past two years. Holmes completed his master's degree and is currently in the Albany, N.Y., area pursuing his next coaching job.
Marina Kelly helped the women's soccer program continue its improvement on the field and its high standard of excellence in the classroom. In 2019, the Pride qualified for the GNAC Tournament thanks in part to two wins and a tie down the stretch. The squad earned the Judith W. Burling Team Award for Academic Excellence, with numerous student-athletes receiving conference academic honors. Kelly completed her Master of Education degree in student success and will continue as an assistant coach within a collegiate soccer program.
Amari King quickly transitioned from an exemplary playing career into a coaching role as an assistant with the men's and women's volleyball teams over the past two years. She helped the players on both squads improve their skills and techniques, plus the program was able to secure several deposits from incoming student-athletes thanks in part to her work. King completed her master's degree in strategic nonprofit communications and is currently a marketing and philanthropy associate with the Merrimack Valley YMCA.
Maria Krull joined the Regis field hockey program as an assistant coach and helped guide the team to five straight victories down the stretch of the 2019 campaign, advancing to the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. For the 2020-21 academic year, she led the program as it continued to perform well academically while providing practice opportunities, plus she worked on the game operations crew. This coming fall, Krull will be enrolled in an internship to meet her requirements for a master's degree in public health, followed by veterinary school.
Victoria Lux used her playing experience to contribute to the success of the women's basketball program, as the team won 15 games during the 2019-20 season and advanced to the semifinals of the 2020 GNAC Tournament. She continued to work with the players during the spring 2021 practice opportunities. This summer, she will be playing for the semi-pro New England TrailBlazers. Completing her master's degree in strategic sports communications, Lux will continue her coaching career as an assistant at the collegiate level.
Jordan Smith worked mainly with the throwers on the track and field team, helping them to eight scoring performances at the 2020 GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. He also helped lead the track and field team on an interim basis during the 2020-21 academic year, taking the squad through two scrimmages in April. Smith also assisted the athletics staff as a member of the game operations crew. He completed his master's degree in health administration and looks to remain in coaching at the collegiate level.
Michaela Tosone made a significant contribution to the Regis athletics department as the coordinator of member services and assistant of athletic administration. She played a strategic role in the planning of several key athletic events, including the 2019 Regis Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony and the 2019 women's basketball tribute reception. In 2020-21, she took on additional duties as the recruiting liaison and academic coordinator for the tennis and swimming and diving programs. She received her master's degree in strategic sports communications and now works for The Kraft Group.
Regis College sponsors 20 intercollegiate programs within NCAA Division III and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
