Pride of 2019: Joshua Unas Named GNAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete of Year

WESTON, Mass. – The "Pride of 2019" series of stories remains in the month of February, as the second installment spotlights Joshua Unas, a four-year member of the Regis men's swimming and diving team who was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Year after leading the Pride to a second place finish at the GNAC Championships.

Unas, originally from Santa Clarita, Calif., rounded out his senior year in record fashion, winning all three of his individual events at the GNAC Championships. His first appearance in the conference meet was the second leg of the 200 medley relay, helping the Pride win the event in 1:42.47. Unas won the 50 breaststroke in 29.07 seconds, the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.71 (over four seconds ahead of second place), and the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.83. He also helped Regis win the 400 medley relay with an overall time of 3:45.26.

At the NEISDA Championships, Unas finished in the top 10 three times individually while also placing in the top seven in all four relays. He won the "B" final of the 50 breaststroke in 29.02 seconds for a ninth place finish overall, plus he qualified for the "A" final in the 100 breaststroke and finished seventh in 1:02.80. Unas also finished 10th in the 100 individual medley in 58.36 seconds.

Unas was a four-time GNAC Athlete of the Week, team captain, and team MVP, plus he was a member of the Regis pool record-setting 800 freestyle relay. Unas earned All-Academic honors from both the GNAC and the NEISDA, and he served as the team's NEISDA All-Sportsmanship Team representative.

He has placed 15 times in the Regis all-time top-20 lists, including 13 top-10 marks. Unas left the Pride third all-time in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.48), 200 individual medley (2:03.48), and 400 individual medley (4:32.36) as well as fourth in the 50 breaststroke (28.61) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.33).

Unas received one of the Senior Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year awards at the Athletics Awards Ceremony in April. He is currently completing his bachelor's degree in nursing at Regis while still supporting the Pride swimming and diving program.
